Cool, free software sites
- ApE: "A plasmid editor". We use this software all the time to manipulate our sequence files.
- LyX: The Document Processor. If you do scientific writing, you should really check out LyX. Especially if you're having to typeset equations all the time.
- Gimp: GNU image manipulation program. It's interesting that "photoshop" has now become a verb. I've found that Gimp is all I've needed for my image drawing needs.
- Inkscape: Draw freely. Inkscape is a great vector-based drawing program. It works in many of the same ways as Adobe Illustrator, but it's free.
