Undergraduate Research
Students conduct most of the outstanding research in our department. Many of these students are undergraduates...
If you are an undergraduate and have an interest in research, familiarize yourself with the faculty research interests and specific work in their research groups. Contact the faculty member to see if opportunities are available for work in their laboratories. In addition to oversight by the faculty member, many undergraduate researchers are mentored by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. After they've developed the necessary laboratory skills some undergraduates are able to work on individual research projects.
Students generally work for an hourly salary, for no salary, or for academic credit for CHE 497/498. However, it's not possible to be paid and to receive credit for CHE 497/498 during the same semester. Funding may be available to support your research from faculty research grants, the College of Engineering and other sources. In addition, the Office of Undergraduate Research, Division of Undergraduate
Academic Programs provides $750-$1,000 awards to a selected number of undergraduate students and up to $300 for operating costs to their supporting faculty for undergraduate research projects during the spring and/or summer (eligibility: all NC State undergraduate students enrolled in at least 6 hours and in good academic standing). Students must submit completed proposals through the Office of Fellowship Advising.
Undergraduate research enables you to participate in the process of discovery, develop new skills, perhaps co-author scientific papers and receive a (hopefully outstanding) letter of recommendation from your faculty advisor, which is a valuable asset when applying to graduate school or searching for a job.
In addition to research opportunities within our department or other departments on campus, many of our students participate during the summer in National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates ( NSF-REU) programs :
Other opportunities include work at federal research laboratories (national laboratories) such as:
